Difference between Manual and Automatic Water Softener

What is a Water Softener?

Water Softener is a machine that makes Hard Water Soft by removing Calcium & Magnesium from it by using Ion Exchange Process. The Resin of Water Softener holds the Calcium & Magnesium and makes Water Soft. Once in a while, Softener Recharges (Either Manually or Automatically) and Hardness collected by Resin is rinsed away with brine water into the drain pipe.

Design of a Water Softener

A Water Softener usually contains a FRP Vessel that is filled with Resin (Working Chemical) and the vessel is mounted with a Softener Port (Manual or Automatic) that is used when the softener needs to be regenerated. The Water is passed through Resin and Resin collects the Hard Molecules of Water like Calcium and Magnesium and makes Water Soft and Soft Water is then forwarded to Tank or Directly to use. A Brine Tank is also placed along with Water Softener that contains Brine Solution (Salt NaCl with Water) that is used to regenerate a Water Softener.

What makes a Water Softener Manual or Automatic?

If the Softener Port is Manually Operated, it is called a Manual Water Softener. Manual Water Softener does not need any electric connection and regeneration of such Water Softener is done Manually means a Person is required to Regenerate the Water Softener by Operating the Port and Switching the Modes to different points for 4 Different Processes like Rinse, Drain, Salt Suction and Refilling Water into Salt Brine Tank.

If the Softener Port is Automatic, it is called an Automatic Water Softener. Automatic Water Softener required an electric connection and regeneration of such Water Softener is done automatically by setting up the port on Time Based or Consumption Based Settings. No Person is required to regenerate such Water Softener. The Processes for Regeneration are same as Rinse, Salt Suction, Refill of Salt with Water and Drain.

Costing

Usually, there is a difference of approx 10K to 20K between a Manual & an Automatic Water Softener of similar Resin Capacities.

Pros & Cons of Manual & Automatic Water Softener?

Manual Water Softener is Time & Energy Consuming while Automatic Water Softener does not require your time & Energy.

Manual Water Softener required your skill for regeneration and if regeneration is not done correctly, water will not get softener while Automatic Water Softener is already preset to different modes and all works are done accordingly that eliminates any chance of mistake.

People do not regenerate Manual Water Softener and after a while they stop using it while Automatic Systems are widely accepted and are used for lifetime since there is no hectic time consumption or any watching required.
